Giggles

March is in full swing up here! and I'm a year older! My birthday was a humbling experience this year. It was pretty awe-inspiring to be nursing my baby girl to bed that night and be overwhelmed with the feeling that my mom did this very thing with me, that I was as tiny and dependent. A feeling that 28 years ago that day my parents were welcoming their third little baby to the world. The love and mystery that surrounds a baby, the indescribable sense that this little squirmy bundle is already growing into a person, who will be a part of society and that we as parents have the responsibility and more importantly the privilege to shape and mold her. I wish I could better put into words the feelings I had that day; the intangible and consuming love for my daughter, my husband and my parents who gave me the love and knowledge needed to be where I am today. Truly the circle of life - but saying it that way just causes me to burst in song, a la The Lion King . . .

The day before my birthday happened to be sunny and wonderful and Nick took the day off work to recharge after a long week of Regionals. We took the opportunity to stroll outside at Blind Slough and soak up some chilly, but much needed rays.

Although it's very unpredictable here right now. We're truly experiencing a March that is "In Like a Lion" so let's just hope it's also "Out Like a Lamb!"

Nick and I are truly blessed with our happy girl, full of smiles and giggles. Colette's little chuckles are transitioning into full-blown little girl laughter which in turn makes her parents laugh. It's the most heart warming sound and she can get on roll at the most unexpected times. Her new most talkative hour is from 6-7pm. I believe this a danger zone and partially responsible for our horrible sleep the past two months but she'll just be sitting in her little chair with a toy and decide that it's time to start telling us about her day. She starts off with the babbles and goes right into showing off her full range of vocal ability. And she pauses, looking straight at you waiting for a response, so of course you say "Oh yeah? And what else did you do?" And off she goes again. We think she *might* be a bit of a storyteller - And we think that's fantastic!

Colette is 5 months today and I cannot believe how fast it's gone by! I got to hold a 5 week-old last weekend and at just over 9 pounds he sure didn't feel like my 5 week-old! At the same gathering was another of Colette's future classmates named Lucia, who is exactly 2 months younger, and exactly the same size! She doesn't look big at all, Colette is just our (still very rollie pollie) pipsqueak! At some point during any get together with other people she starts in on her "chatter" and I get totally immersed in our "conversation" only to look up and find all the eyes in the room on her and delighted comments of "Wow! Listen to her!" It's such a part of her personality and normal day that I don't realize other people are still caught off guard by her talents! (It's my blog, my bragging rights!)

On a different topic, I am now a proud contributor to the growing come-back of milk sharing! If you aren't familiar with this (and why would you be unless you're in the new-mom phase) the trend of "wet-nurse" has come back but with some modern twists. These days it is becoming more common practice for mothers with over supply of breast milk to share with mothers who are having difficulties. Sometimes women are choosing to "cross-nurse" but more often it's just a transfer of fresh or frozen milk which mom can then bottle-feed to baby. So . . . my little miss happens to have discerning tastes and we haven't been able to get her to drink frozen milk! This requires me to supply her daytime caregivers with fresh milk each day - and a freezer full of previously frozen milk! It was killing me thinking that I would have to just toss it, knowing that there are moms out there who have struggled with having enough milk for their babies. So I did a little research and learned about milk sharing and by chance I found myself talking with another new mom and was able to give her my frozen supply! Her baby girl drank it up without hesitation and she we're all thrilled that it worked out this way! Since I haven't continued to build up my frozen stock I don't have a lot more to share but I'm thankful that I could give a little.
